Election result: Bolzano Calling!
In February 2025, we called for a vote on the next European Utopia campaign. Now the result of the vote is clear: we will be travelling by train together! On 18 October, we will cross nonsensical barriers with a wagon-worthy cultural programme and travel from Munich to Bolzano. A double border experience to celebrate 30 years of Schengen.
During the journey through one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe, we will talk to passengers and probably also officials, honour open borders and encourage a critical examination of the reintroduced controls at the German-Austrian and Austrian-Italian borders. In Bolzano, we will meet South Tyroleans who are campaigning against nationalism and in favour of open borders. We will also learn about an elixir of universal cohesion: wine. On 19 October, we will return to Munich.
As a reminder, the Schengen Agreement came into force in 1995, which largely abolished border controls between EU countries. Today, this achievement is in jeopardy. Identity checks have become commonplace again - an expensive and absurd step backwards in the direction of small statehood. On our trip, we will celebrate the opposite: a borderless Europe of democracy and human rights.
Preparations for our trip are already in full swing. Details of the cultural programme will be announced here on our website as soon as possible. But we are already looking forward to your feedback: Keep the 18th and 19th of October free, come along to Bolzano and write to us at mail@european-utopia.org to let us know how many Utopians you would like to join us so that we can reserve as many places as possible in the train carriage and overnight accommodation. We look forward to travelling together!
